Stoic Protocols

The compounding interest of goodness

"We should strive to be good citizens and contribute to the well-being of society."
- Cleanthes

A couple of days ago I sent an email about happiness.

Well, if you follow the advice in this quote from Cleanthes, you'll be happier!

I love how it builds on itself.

Let's break it down.

Of course, we're breaking it down from my perspective.

Probably not quite the same as someone 2000 years ago..

But anyway, here we go.

We should strive to be good citizens.

Ok, that could include:

  • be a law-abiding person
  • help your fellow man (women too)
  • participate in government

We should contribute to the well-being of society:

  • all of the above items
  • be pleasant
  • help the young or needy
  • work to solve problems, not just complain

These are just the most basic of things.

Each of us should create a better defined list for ourselves.

If we dial up our goodness and contributions little by little, think of the difference it will make.

Small changes that compound over time.

Let's do this!

Let me know if there's a Stoic you'd like to learn more about?

Thanks,

Tom
